“You’re never going to kill storytelling, because it’s built in the human plan. We come with it.” – Margaret Atwood
Today is National Read A Book Day, so we want to harness this theme and inspire others to get reading! I asked our editors to choose a story that has inspired them and that they’d love to share. This could be a book that is fulfilling or joy-bringing, or an impactful story from any point in life!
Without further ado, here are our editors’ picks of stories they have chosen to share.

The modern world we live in is set up to make us unhappy. From having a phone glued to our side that constantly pings, to being surrounded by conversations filled with comparison, society isn’t easy to navigate. Haig pours his life experience into these pages, allowing us to take a step back and really look at the world. With his thought-provoking passages and words of advice from a mental health survivor, this book is nothing short of necessary in today’s world.

This 1960’s sci-fi novel takes us below the ice to learn of untold discoveries. A team on a Polar Expedition detect a subterranian signal and an incredible phenomeon ensues. At once a gripping tale from out of this world, and a touching love story, La nuit des temps is a timeless read.

Holocaust survivor, Primo Levi, lays down his memories of Auschwitz with faithful, fastidious care thanks to his chemist background and ernest human character. Described by fellow Holocaust literature author, Philip Roth, as “One of the century’s truly necessary books”, I’ll leave the rest for you to discover from Levi himself.

A love story set in nature, City of the Beasts is full of the alluring adventure of the Amazonian rainforest. An unlikely duo, 15-year-old Alexander and his reporter grandmother, set out on an expedition which will alter both their lives, and see other colourful characters cross their path. On their hunt for the legendary ‘Beast’, they stumble across countless other wonders of the jungle.
This story promises to share something tangible of the bewlidering Amazon: Allende’s vivid descriptions will leave you ready to reach out and touch the leaves, with tropical birdsong in your ear. A tale for all ages and not soon forgotten!
