There’s something quite special about losing yourself in a good book. With all this time in our hands and bookshelves cluttered with books, it can be quite overwhelming trying to figure out what to read next. As we continue finding new ways to tackle these difficult times, our KeiSei editors decided to share some literary inspiration with their book picks of the month.
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
Camila’s pick – KeiSei’s Lifestyle & Wellness Editor
Sylvia Plath’s only novel has become a modern classic which becomes increasingly significant as time passes. Plath’s semi-autobiographical book tells the story of Esther Greenwood, a bright and incredibly talented young woman who falls into depression during a summer interning for a magazine in New York. Gloomy yet profoundly emotional, The Bell Jar is a must-read.
Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy
Anastasia’s pick – KeiSei’s Beauty Editor
Set in the 1870s, Thomas Hardy’s first literary success follows the story of Bathsheba Everdeen, who takes her position as a farmer with a considerable estate. Due to Bathsheba’s boldness and beauty, she catches the attention of three very different admirers. Hardy’s Far From the Madding Crowd is a novel of unexpected passion which shatters conventional gender norms.
City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert
Daisy’s pick – KeiSei’s Fashion Editor
Written by bestselling novelist Elizabeth Gilbert, City of Girls tells the story of 19-year old Vivian Morris who after getting kicked out of Vassar College is sent to live with her unconventional Aunt Peg, the owner of an extravagant theatre in Manhattan. A book which will vividly take you to the glamorous New York of the 1940s and meditates brilliantly on the choices women make.
Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
Matt’s pick – KeiSei’s Lifestyle Editor
When it comes to Jane Austen, it can never go wrong. Austen’s novel tells the story of innocent Catherine Morland, who is invited to spend a few weeks in Bath with her neighbours. Despite Catherine’s numerous scrapes whilst visiting Northanger Abbey, the heroine learns the truth about life and love. A remarkable story with perceptive observations of the role of women in society.

A Room With A View by E.M Forster
Raquel’s pick – KeiSei’s Lifestyle Editor
When virtuous Lucy visits Florence with her rigid cousin Charlotte and meets the unconventional Emersons, an extraordinary love story starts to unfold. Forster eloquently portrays the battle between repressed morals and the beauty of life in this unmissable novel.

The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami
Beatrice’s pick – KeiSei’s Editor Contributor
Imaginative, colourful and even a bit bizarre. That is the way Murakami has become one of Japan’s most preeminent writers. In this story, unemployed Toru Okada is in search for his wife’s missing cat. Soon, Okada finds himself looking for his wife as well as he gets immersed in an absorbing and unpredictable drama. Captivating and filled with imagination, The Wind-up Bird Chronicle won’t disappoint.
With all this free time during lockdown and incessant lists of books to read, we hope our editor’s picks gives you some inspiration to immerse yourself in a good book. From colourful, imaginative stories to modern classics; just remember to keep reading!
