It is so important to try and make ethical choices wherever possible, but with so much information out there it can be overwhelming. That’s where your phone comes in. Your best friend on your path to sustainable living, there are so many ingenious apps.
From how to make the best choices when shopping, to how to be conscious with what you eat, our app store round-up will help you make better, more ethical choices.
Available in over 180 countries, HappyCow allows users to find vegetarian and vegan options at restaurants, cafes and grocery stores around the world. It gives you the opportunity to filter by dietary requirements, delivery or take-away, and cuisine type.
Using the map, it’s easy to search nearby or in advance of a trip, and you can save places to your favourites. As well as the app, they have a website which is free to use.
OLIO’s goal is to help the environment, the community, and your wallet. By connecting with your neighbours and local shops, surplus food and other items can be shared instead of thrown away. It’s so easy to use: you just upload a photo and a brief description.
Everything ‘sold’ on OLIO is free, and you simply message your neighbours on the app to arrange pick-up. With plenty of safety measures to protect you – from checking a user’s profile and rating beforehand, to reporting someone if they’re suspicious – OLIO is a great addition to any phone.
This app is amazing and helps you turn your home into a sustainable sanctuary. There are 52 simple steps to start greening your home, which you can break up into manageable chunks.
By selecting your level, you can decide how many positive environmental changes you want to implement each week and track your progress throughout. For each task you learn the ‘how’ and the ‘why’ and are given resources to help make your sustainable journey easy and achievable. Helping improve your health and the planet’s health, all while saving the planet, you can really make a difference.
With a well-known website, Good On You have recently taken their platform to our pockets. Giving you the ability to check brand ratings and discover new sustainable fashion labels from around the world, you can learn which stores you should keep supporting and which you should stay away from.
With a database of over 2,000 brands assessed for their impact on people the planet and animals, you can be sure that nothing has slipped through the cracks. As well as seeing how brands compare, the app features style edits, interviews and tips to keep you up to date and help you on your journey to an ethical wardrobe.
5. Surrey Recycles
It’s so important not to slack when it comes to recycling. With so much plastic in our oceans due to laziness, it’s really not hard to be conscious when disposing of waste. Simply search for an item and the app will tell you how to recycle, compost or properly dispose of it. Don’t live in Surrey? Most of the information is applicable country-wide, but there are plenty of area-specific alternatives like Recycle Sheffield.
So much energy is wasted in our homes. It’s important that we don’t leave heating or lights on when we’re not at home, or when we could simply put on a cardigan and achieve the same results. With the Nest app you can control your thermostat, but it also senses the location of your phone and can automatically turn off the heat when you leave.
Helping you save energy and thus the planet and your wallet, you can see how much you use and start making changes to cultivating a more sustainable home.
Time and time again, we’re told that removing dairy and (most importantly) meat from our diets we can reduce our impact on the planet. Research in 2019 revealed that cutting out these two things is the single most effective way to reduce your carbon-footprint, which is hard to argue with. That’s where Giki comes in.
By selecting your priorities – be it climate change, eating healthy, palm oil, less plastic or animal welfare – you can scan products and see whether they are sustainable and a healthy choice. By allowing you to see the full impact of what you put in your basket, Giki can steer you towards those brands which share your beliefs.
By making small but regular changes, we can make choices that are good for us, better for the environment, and fairer to others.
With smartphones constantly glued to our hands, it’s a no-brainer to make the most of them in our quest for a sustainable life. We all try to be conscious and do our best, but it needn’t be a chore. By downloading some of the apps we’ve featured here, you can start to make ethical choices in every aspect of your life.
