There is no doubt that in the past year we’ve spent way too much time tucked inside constantly looking at ourselves on Zoom calls, observing every little imperfection that can be found on our face. However, one good thing about lockdown has been that we’ve had plenty of time to experiment or to even re-invent ourselves. Hence, some of us have found new life-changing skincare products, tools or techniques to elevate our skincare routine.
Face massage or a “face workout” as many call it has become increasingly popular in the past couple of years. No wonder, as it has so many skin benefits! Maskne, puffy face, ageing or dull skin – you name it – can all be eased or even treated with facial massage.
Facial massage is definitely something you need to add into your routine if you haven’t yet. There are many different tools and ways to massage the face so that you can find your own best tailored way or tool to match your lifestyle. After all, what lockdown made us all realise is that self-care is more important than ever. Therefore, adding little steps into your skin routine will eventually help to ease your mind and benefit your skin at the same time.
Benefits Of Facial Massage
“Regular use brightens, tightens, drains toxins and reduces puffiness by boosting the supply of vital nutrients and oxygen to your skin, giving you that immediate, fresh glow.”
-Sarah Chapman, expert facialist
1. Stimulates Collagen Production
Looking for anti-aging benefits? First and foremost, facial massage boosts your blood circulation which brings oxygen to your skin. This can lead to your overall natural skin glow and brighter complexion. Consequently, you’ll also stimulate the collagen production and cell growth.
By practicing regular face massage you can reduce the wrinkles and fine lines on your face drastically. As a result, your face will appear and feel tighter and more firm.
2. Relaxes Tension
Additionally, facial massage relaxes muscle tension on the face. Especially if you hold your tension in the jawline, regular face workout can help you ease the overall tension and therefore help you relax. It will also increase the product absorption, which leads to a higher effectiveness of your skincare products.
3. Aids Lymphatic Drainage
Massaging your face also aids lymphatic drainage and eliminates toxins from your skin. As we’re slowly returning back to normal, our skin will have to deal with the environmental stressors once again. These will cause the extra buildup of toxins on our skin which can contribute to puffiness, breakouts or even fine lines. By increasing the blood flow on your face and lymphatic drainage can help to flush out the toxins from the skin leading to rejuvenated healthy looking complexion. What an absolute dream!
4. De-puffs
Five minutes of facial massage in the morning can be extremely beneficial to you if you haven’t had a proper night of sleep, ate a heavy meal or drank alcohol the night before. These would unfortunately make your face appear puffy and dull the following morning.
However, by energising movements you can lift, de-puff, and sculpt your face, removing any signs of puffy eyes and skin caused by the choices you made the previous night. Hence why, the facial massage is often referred to as the natural face lift – with the right movements or tools you can achieve wonders!
Facial Massage Tools To Use
Your Hands
Firstly, to implement the facial massage into your routine you can easily just use your own hands. Our beloved makeup artist Lucinda Worth recommends starting with a facial massage before applying makeup in order to get your blood flowing, reduce puffiness and reveal hydrated glowy skin.
Make sure your hands are extra clean to avoid spreading any bacteria across your skin. Subsequently, apply a hydrating oil for enough slip to perform the face massage effectively. Watch a full video on our Instagram to follow the step by step facial massage skin prep tutorial:
Face Roller
Face rollers, jade rollers or rose quartz rollers have been hyped for a while now but all for a great reason! They’re not only aesthetically pleasing but they work exceptionally well when it comes to facial massage.
Jade rollers have been actually used in skincare for thousands of years in Chinese ancient rituals to enhance facial features and improve vitality. They’re great for a quick face detox as they aid lymphatic drainage while improving skin elasticity, releasing muscle tension, reducing fine lines or wrinkles and helping products to absorb into skin better and faster.
Gua Sha
Gua sha is a traditional Chinese healing method to promote lymphatic drainage. The gua sha stone is the ultimate tool for a facial workout which can sculpt, tone and define your face. Gently stroking your skin with gua sha can help to lift the contours of your cheeks and prevent your skin from sagging as it will firm and revitalise your face. Gua sha tools can be made from a variety of stones which usually stay naturally cold and promote your wellbeing at the same time.
