Unlike the typical normal British weather of rain, wind and more rain, instead this spring we were blessed with an abundance of sunshine (read our guide to hot weather dressing here). Although the majority of our time was spent at home during lockdown, that didn’t stop us from getting our glow on in the comfort of our own homes and many of us are dying to show off our glowing tans, just in time for Summer.
Whether it be in our gardens, or in the local park (socially distanced obvs) we have taken advantage of every opportunity we can get our hands on to soak up some Vitamin D and boost our mood. But, if you’re pale and pasty like me, you end up looking like a lobster after just 10 minutes of basking in the sun’s rays (wearing SPF of course). So, why not fake it with a little fake tan?
However, certain fake tan ingredients can be rather unkind to our skin. The skin-colouring chemical dihydroxyacetone, most commonly known as DHA, has been linked to the development of cancers and allergic reactions if absorbed by the bloodstream.
Although DHA is FDA approved (The Food and Drug Administration), scientists say that the chemical shouldn’t be inhaled or applied to areas in which the skin is covered in mucous membranes i.e. the lips, nose and eyes because the risks of doing so are unknown (best to avoid the spray tan booth then).
Achieve a healthy, natural-looking tan with this certified organic self-tan lotion from Green People. The quick-drying and non-greasy formula contains naturally derived DHA from sugar, along with Rosehip Oil, Rose Geranium Oil, Sandalwood Oil and Aloe Vera to hydrate, soothe and nourish sensitive skin whilst providing it with a delicate scent (no biscuit smell here).
For best results, use after exfoliating and apply in circular movements, paying particular care to the elbows, ankles and knees. Re-apply every 3-5 days for the perfect ‘I just got back from Bali’ glow.
This light, delicate lotion delivers a fast and natural-looking tan so that you can have a healthy-looking glow all year long. It contains a 100% natural and unique Ecocert approved DHA derived from Sugar Beet and is gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin, leaving it feeling soft, smooth and supple.
For those of you that like a glossy and radiant looking tan, look no further than this self-tan oil from TanOrganic. This organic, eco-certified and vegan formula provides a quick, hydrating and fuss-free tan that gives you a natural looking, warm glow. It contains skin-loving ingredients including Aloe Vera, ensuring a perfect shade without a patch in sight. Your skin will be left feeling ultra-moisturised and smooth, with a glistening chestnut hue.
This rich body lotion is suited to all skin types and is designed to give the perfect gradual tan over a number of applications. It contains organic Papaya and Aloe Vera to smooth the skin and soothe any signs of redness and irritation, whilst shea butter deeply nourishes and replenishes any dry skin. My personal fave.
If you’re after an instant tan, this quick drying, non-greasy bronzing gel from Sukin is the perfect solution. It contains a gentle and natural form of DHA that adds an instant bronzing colour to the skin and gradually develops over time for a sun-kissed glow. Infused with Aloe Vera and Rosehip Oil, the gel soothes and hydrates the skin without any stickiness.
