Since the 1980s, and with the launch of MTV, music videos have become a much-loved part of the music industry. And whilst we first may watch a video for the music, the iconic looks and out-there fashions have become an important part of music videos.
After the acclaimed Style Edit on the coolest film characters, this time we’ve recreated some of our favourite looks from iconic music videos then and now using sustainable and ethical brands.
Whitney Houston – I Wanna Dance With Somebody (1987)
The legendary Whitney Houston was known for her power ballads and for being one of the original pop princesses. Her music video for I Wanna Dance With Somebody has become an iconic ‘80’s moment and features some of the coolest styles from the decade.
To recreate this iconic ‘80’s look, we paired a simple black midi dress with an oversized denim jacket. Add a lavender strappy heel (our nod to Whitney’s lavender dress in the video), a black crossbody bag and chic gold accessories for an effortlessly cool Whitney look.

Madonna – Vogue (1990)
Whilst we may associate Madonna with Jean Paul Gaultier corsets and conical bras, the music video for Vogue has become synonymous with the fashion industry. Proving that a double-breasted black suit is chic always, Madonna’s simple suit paired with a corset-like crop is just as iconic now as it was in 1990.
We’ve teamed our black suit with a bandeau top, a strappy heel and statement gold rings.

Adele – Send My Love (To Your New Lover) (2016)
Adele may be known for her incredible voice and beautiful ballads, but her choice of statement gowns has made her a style icon. After a 5-year hiatus from the industry, Adele’s third album, 25, marked a new era for the singer, as she moved away from break-up songs.
In the Send My Love (To Your New Lover) video, Adele wowed with her powerful lyrics and incredible floral dress. To recreate this iconic yet simple look, we’ve paired this floral dress with pink sandals and delicate accessories.

Beyoncé – Hold Up (2016)
Since the 1990s, Beyoncé has inspired with her powerful lyrics and girl-power music videos. In 2016, with the release of her critically acclaimed album Lemonade, Beyoncé wowed with her series of powerful music videos. The image of Beyoncé in a Roberto Cavalli yellow dress in the Hold Up music video, for instance, has become an iconic moment in music history.
Inspired by Beyoncé’s powerful yellow ensemble, we have found this incredible yellow slip dress. To complete the simple yet chic look, we have accessorised with a simple black sandal and statement gold earrings.

Rihanna – Wild Thoughts (2017)
It is undeniable that Rihanna has become a powerful figure in both the music and fashion industries. Before the launch of her fashion and beauty lines, Rihanna’s music videos were full of experimental looks that were powerful and chic. In Wild Thoughts, featuring alongside DJ Khaled and Bryson Tiller, Rihanna’s brightly coloured summer looks steal the show.
In this particular scene, Rihanna wows with bright hues of pinks and greens and a mix of incredible accessories. Inspired by her look, we’ve created a summery outfit adorned with cool accessories. Pairing this floral off the shoulder top with wide-leg jeans and a clashing floral headscarf, and finishing the look with gold hoops and retro sunglasses.

Harry Styles – Watermelon Sugar (2020)
Since the release of his solo debut album in 2017, Harry Styles has developed a signature style that combines retro influences with modern styles. In his latest music video for the hit song, Watermelon Sugar, Styles adorns several retro outfits inspired by the hues and textures of 1970’s fashion.
Inspired by Harry’s love of retro, we’ve paired a knitted handkerchief top with high-waisted denim shorts. To complete the look, we’ve added a straw hat, the perfect retro trainers and a pair of statement sunglasses. And, of course, no Harry Styles look is complete without some ethical pearl accessories.
