Jewellery is the finishing touch to any outfit and it can elevate your look. Today, with society entering into a new wave of feminism, it’s more important than ever that women feel empowered and have the ability to express themselves freely.
Meet MOSUO
Established in 2019 by sisters Sara and Victoria, MOSUO celebrates femininity. Created by women, for women, their delicate pieces are just as suitable for everyday wear as they are for pairing with cocktail dresses. With prices ranging from €185 to €1.140, the brand makes luxury accessible.
Using 14-karat gold, their jewellery is of the highest quality and won’t tarnish. By opting for a small production process, they ensure that each purchase you make has been carefully hand-crafted with an eye for detail. From using ethically sourced raw materials to how they packaging the products, their holistic approach puts responsibility at the heart of MOSUO.
Carefully selecting family-owned ateliers with ethical working conditions, MOSUO’s accessories minimise the devastating impact that the industry can have on local communities. Large-scale production and intensive mining pollutes the air and contaminates water, poisoning the surrounding communities.
With long and complex supply chains, raw materials pass through many different hands before they even get exported. But, with MOSUO working with small family businesses, their products are responsibly sourced, giving you peace of mind.
“Quality makes a subtle difference”
But it’s not just here where MOSUO flourishes. With every purchase you support Self-Empowerment through Education, providing girls in Northern Cameroon with scholarships helping them gain access to schooling. Thanks to the project fewer girls in the area are forced into marrying young, with it fostering a new generation of socially and economically independent women.
Through encouraging female empowerment in vulnerable communities to making sure their craftmanship is ethical, MOSUO’s feminist approach to the jewellery industry is admirable. The relationship between women and nature is something that used to be sacred yet is now taken for granted. But, with the environment being an important feminist issue, it’s important that others follow MOSUO’s lead.
To find out more about MOSUO and what inspires them to continue producing gorgeous and responsible jewellery, we spoke to the sisters behind the brand.
What made you want to create a jewellery brand?
We’ve always been jewellery lovers, but it was one specific 14K gold necklace that our parents gifted us that changed our view forever. We wore it every day without having to take it off; not to swim, not at the gym, and not to sleep.
We have a busy lifestyle and want to look and feel our best every day, so we loved that our favourite delicate piece made us shine anytime, anywhere. Its design fitted a shirt and jeans look but also a cocktail dress and put us on the hunt for more fine jewellery pieces.
We ended up finding interesting designs but they weren’t solid gold so eventually our skin and the piece itself would turn black or green and we ended up throwing them away. We dreamed of redefining traditional fine jewellery with jewellery that lasts a lifetime and with an elegant design for the modern sophisticated woman.
We started by designing one special charm necklace that each woman would be able to personalise by choosing the gold, the stone and each charm. Not long after, many more ideas and dreams have been created at our atelier. We launched MOSUO with around 50 feminine and mystical fine designs.
What does sustainability mean to you?
To consume consciously, to appreciate what we have, and to find innovative solutions to current global challenges. It’s essential that everyone we’re working with is working in ethical conditions and is mutually profiting. It’s all about connecting and creating without doing any harm to the environment.
Describe MOSUO in three words
Feminine, strong, real.
How did you get involved with the Self-Empowerment Through Education project?
We’ve always been involved with female empowerment. MOSUO is a brand created by women for women and so from the beginning it has been clear to us that we will support women less fortunate than we are.
We believe it all starts with education, so the education project from Terre des Femmes was exactly what we were looking for. The big dream is to start our own project one day.
Why do you think it’s important for jewellery to be the way women express themselves?
Fashion is an act of self-expression. A woman’s choice of jewellery mirrors her self-confidence and expresses her character and spirit. By doing this, we believe that every woman supports the idea of independence and the right to be truly herself which, in turn, inspires others to feel the same.
There’s something magical about wearing gemstones and gold jewellery. For centuries, jewellery has been an integral part of human adornment – especially for women. Gold was thought to improve well-being and imbue women with strength and protection. From our experience fine jewellery brings out a woman’s strength, vulnerability and femininity, and adds a subtle touch of luxury to her everyday life.
Our favourite pieces
“Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.”
Marilyn Monroe’s famous quote is no less true now than it was in the 1950s, but today we are lucky enough to be able to choose what kind of industry practices we are supporting with our purchases.
