Top Tips On How To Prepare Your Skin For The Winter

Top Tips on How to prepare your skin for the winter

By Tess Hardy

Preparing your skin for the Winter can be a troublesome task for the majority of us! We have a lot on our plate having to transition into our Winter wardrobe, think of all the Christmas preparations and remember to take an umbrella out with us every time we leave the house – let alone add skincare to the list! Yet your skin is in a constant state of vulnerability and can never fall short of some extra TLC. At KeiSei we have put together some top tips and suggestions on how to stay hydrated and moisturised in the build up to Christmas and party season!

Top Tips for all Skin Types

First and foremost, your skin will be thankful for having a daily routine. The skin care basics are to cleanse, tone, moisturize and protect by applying SPF, following these steps in the morning and before you go to bed.

Our favourite SPF which are kind to the planet are REN Clean Screen Mineral SPF30 and  Daily Protection Formula SPF50 by Saltee Skincare.

In the Winter, your skin is put under more stress and dry air strips skin of its natural oils so you will need to adapt your routine. It is wise to consider these factors at this time of the year to help counteract the challenges that come with seasonal change:

Switch from Summer skin care to Winter skin care

Changing up your skincare is vital; in the Winter, your skin needs more moisture. The sweaty Summer is now over which calls for a gentler and more hydrated approach. Find products that are less harsh – a nourishing cleanser that leaves your skin feeling smooth, a non-alcoholic based toner as they will only dry your skin out further, and a thicker moisturizer or additional night cream.

Exfoliate gently

If your skin is looking dull, try exfoliating once or twice a week – it will remove the top layer of dead skin and even out your skin tone, bringing back that beloved Summer glow! The same goes for your lips, so try a sugar scrub before applying lip balm.

Rejuvenate and hydrate!

Any excuse for an at-home spa treatment is a good excuse! If you love a weekly pamper session, you can always find the time to treat yourself, so why not start by bringing out the face masks? Honey and coconut oil are two amazing, natural ingredients that will soak your skin in hydration and moisture.

Lifestyle Factors:

Keep up the exercise!

Forget hibernating and hiding under baggy clothes. Getting ‘Summer body ready’ now by keeping active will help your skin stay healthy and increase circulation.

Drink more water and fluids

In Summer your body naturally reaches for water, but in Winter we crave a warm cup of hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows. To prevent dehydration, fine lines and wrinkles, drink at least 2 liters of water per day.

Protect your skin

Remember to apply safe sunscreen every day – not just when the sun is out! Pop a hand cream in your bag and wear protective clothing like hats, gloves and scarves to protect your skin from harsh Winter winds.

Shower or bathe in lukewarm water

As much as I love a hot shower as a 6am wake up call or a long, hot bath as my evening downtime, they dry out our skin. Try to shorten and limit them, turn the heat down a notch and use a soft body lotion afterwards.

Always take your makeup off before getting a good night’s sleep

The number one rule is to never sleep in your makeup! Sleep is often neglected but it is hugely important to get seven to eight hours of sleep per night with a freshly cleansed face. This is prime time for your body and skin to recharge and repair. Enough quality sleep is also key to a healthy lifestyle and overall wellbeing.

These top tips are essential preparation steps for renewing your skin in the Winter. Your routine and lifestyle play a huge part in the glow and safeguarding of your skin, along with your diet. Start off by adjusting your daily routine and once you begin to notice radiant results, the rest will follow!
