Nothing kills the mood more than thinking about our current climate crisis, and unfortunately, the cruel reality is that probably your sex life is not as sustainable as it could be. Condoms are generally made by non-biodegradable latex along with hardening agents, and the majority of sex toys are typically made with rubber or plastic, not to mention that they require batteries, leaving a trail of toxic carbon which severely harms our environment.
It may seem like an unusual topic to tackle, but think about it- we already try to avoid heavy chemicals on our food and cosmetics, so why not take similar care of our sex life? Fortunately for us, the sex industry is starting to catch up with our sustainable aspirations, so at KeiSei we decided to recommend the best tips to make your sex life still enjoyable but a bit more eco-friendly.
Condoms
When it comes to making your sex life more sustainable, it’s essential to focus on one of the main elements – condoms. The majority of condoms are made of non-biodegradable latex and contain casein; an animal protein added to make them smoother. However, there are many eco-friendly options to choose from, which are a lot less damaging to the environment.
A great option would be Sustain condoms, which use fair-trade rubber, are non-GMO and employ recyclable paper packaging. The company also donates 10% of all profits to women’s reproductive and health organisations, which is definitely a plus. Another option is Hanx condoms which are vegan and don’t contain casein; instead, they use thistle extract and are made by fair trade, natural latex.
Even though these are more eco-friendly options, it is still unknown how long they take to biodegrade, so if you’re ever tempted to flush them down the toilet- don’t.
Lubricant
The use of lube has become way more popular than it used to be because let’s face it, it’s fun, and no one wants uncomfortable sex. However, a lot of lubricants are full of chemicals based in petroleum, which can lead to water waste and oil spills. An excellent alternative to this would be aloe vera, but if you prefer to buy lube specifically, there are plenty of eco-friendly and vegan options.
The “organic intimacy company” Yes Yes Yes offers organic, water-based lubricants with no parabens. As founders Sarah Brooks and Susi Lennox told Glamour:
Sex Toys
Sex toys are probably the easiest products to go sustainable with. The Gaia Eco Biodegradable Vibrator is the first recyclable and biodegradable vibrator, made of starch-based bioplastic and helps reduce our carbon footprint. However, if you already own a rabbit vibrator or any other sex toy with electronic equipment, the sex toy brand Love Honey accepts them and will recycle your harmful bunny. Nonetheless, if you can, always choose silicone over plastic since it’s easier to recycle and more ocean friendly.
Another eco-friendly option? Njoy Pure Wand Stainless Dildo. Made of stainless steel, Njoy’s pure wand is not only sustainable but will pleasantly surprise you.
From organic, water-based lubricants to vegan condoms, these picks are perfect for enjoying some sexy time and embracing the sustainable life. They are not only less damaging to the environment, but they will offer you a great time. We hope these tips inspire you to choose a more eco-friendly lifestyle and give you the enjoyment you’re seeking for. What about you? What have you tried to have a more sustainable sex life?
