Spring is around the corner, bidding the stagnant start of the year farewell. Soon the days will be getting longer, the nights shorter, and the flowers will start to bloom. With signs of renewed life, now is the perfect time for a seasonal detox. What better way to do this then with the help of a spring green clean? Whether you need a clear-out or home refresh, we have the ultimate guide for you.
While many of us are familiar with the term spring cleaning, little are aware of the importance of this seasonal ritual. It goes beyond the collective tasks of household chores.
Like others, I’ve always found the act of a deep cleaning somewhat therapeutic, from the meditative state of washing up to the peacefulness of a spotless environment. There are several reasons behind this.
According to research, those who describe their living spaces as “cluttered” or full of “unfinished projects” are more likely to be feeling tired and depressed. This is because clutter can stir negative emotions, such as confusion and irritability. Whereas a well-organised home gives us a sense of control, creating a restorative atmosphere.
Naturally, everyday life can get in the way of a weekly clean. It’s easy to fall behind, making life feel muddled. Luckily, it’s not something a little spring cleaning can’t fix. But can we do it in a way that doesn’t negatively impact our health and the planet? The answer is yes, and there’s a special term for it. Green Cleaning.
What is Green Cleaning?
In a nutshell, Green Cleaning refers to cleaning methods and products that are environmentally friendly and toxic-free.
Over the last century, manufacturers and clever marketing have persuaded us to invest in ‘heavy-duty’ products. Most of which contains nasty chemical pollutants and hazardous toxins. As a result, this can lead to future health risks.
Luckily, you don’t need any of those dangerous products to get the job done. You can still achieve a deep spring clean using natural ingredients. There are many alternatives available to refresh your home without the use of chemicals and unnecessary plastic. However, don’t be alarmed if you don’t know where to start.
Here are some easy steps towards giving your sustainable home a sparkling detox this Spring.
Step 1: Get Rid Of The Clutter
Before we get to the cleaning part, the first of a household polish is decluttering. Not only does this make the process much easier, but it also helps to maintain a clean space.
Start by choosing one section at a time. Once you’ve identified the clutter, divide it between what you need, what’s not in season and what you don’t want to keep.
For things that are used on a regular basis, dedicated a small, neat area for storage. In the wise words of Marie Kondo, “Clutter is caused by a failure to return things to where they belong.” Therefore, creating storage spaces is essential when it comes to keeping clutter at bay.
With most of the decluttering done, all that’s left is any useless items. Give those unwanted things a second home by donating them to your local charity shop or to your loved ones.
Step 2: Get Down & Dirty
Now it’s time to get to the cleaning part. The most effective way to do it is to work your way down from the top. However, it’s worth stripping your bedding for a laundry wash first if you’re cleaning the bedroom.
The begin with, give the room a light dust. Start with the tallest surfaces first, such as shelves, bookcases, and cupboards.
Next, clean all surfaces using a non-toxic cleaner using reusable or repurposed clothes. For a deeper clean, ensure to reach the crevices to get rid of any hidden dirt build-up.
Once everything is sparkling clean, sweep, or vacuum the floor to remove any dust traces from earlier.
Step 3: Ventilate & Fragrance
To finalise a green spring clean, it’s important to ventilate the place. Opening your window is one of the best ways you can improve the air quality of your home. It quickly removes stubborn airborne odours, getting rid of the smell of last week’s takeout. It can also lightly fragrance your home. Aside from new beginnings, Spring is known for its scent. The season’s blossoms carry a subtle floral smell, whiffing nature’s energizing aroma.
Alternatively, you can also fragrance your home using organic candles and pure essential oils, creating the essence of Spring from the inside out.
So, say goodbye to all the clutter, dirt, and the terrible smell of bleach. With these three simple steps, you can quickly master the art of a spring green clean this year, allowing you to embrace the new season.
