Time to ‘Marie Kondo’ your closet.

With seasons changing and lockdown happening again, now is perhaps the perfect timing to give your capsule wardrobe a try.

What exactly is a capsule wardrobe? It can mean a different thing to anyone, because the idea of capsule wardrobe is the reason behind doing it. Everyone has their own reason why they want to try capsule wardrobe and how it benefits them.

“When you surround yourself with possessions that spark joy, you’ll create a home and a life you love” – Marie Kondo

A closet clean out is always beneficial.

There is always pieces of clothing getting forgotten or left behind.

Things that you once loved sometimes gets buried behind by newer and trendier clothing. Revisiting your closet can help you realise how well you actually know your closet and made you think the amount of times you said “I have nothing to wear” can actually be solved easily without spending more money.

Going through your closet space is always a journey.

When you pick up one clothing and it brings you back to when you bought it and the memories behind it. To some, it might be an emotional journey, one that will definitely help them to realise the importance of closet clean outs.

Taking time to think about the things to get rid of and to keep is also a process to healing and self-improvement.

With the recent pandemic, staying at home can be suffocating, especially with clutters around. Doing clean outs will definitely help with clearing not only the physical space but also one’s mental space.

No.1 – Setting your intention

Before going to a closet clean out, it always important to set an intention and an outcome.

Do you have a certain goal you want to achieve? Perhaps reducing half the amount or fitting all clothes properly and organized to a smaller space you have? Maybe you are determined to take this as a journey to throw away anything that doesn’t spark joy to you anymore? Setting an intention makes you more motivated and clearer headed when doing the clean out.

No.2 – Revamped and donate

Remember to stay sustainable and ethical.

Maybe you have a piece of clothing you really like but it doesn’t have the right fit you are looking for, revamping it might be a better alternative than just giving it a red card and never seeing it again. Be it a DIY or sending it to a seamstress, giving old clothes a new life can also help make the clothing even more special and unique.

Finding your own choice of donation place can also help make your donations a more meaningful. By understanding and choosing your choice of donating place before you start your closet clean out, will provide you with more motivation and reasons to do it.

No.3 – Be kind with yourself

Give yourself enough space and time.

Try your capsule wardrobe for a week before giving the clothes away.

“The objective of cleaning is not just to clean, but to feel happiness living within that environment.” – Marie Kondo.

Even though it is a capsule wardrobe and some people do limit themselves to a certain number of clothes, however, in order to be sustainable, being comfortable with your choices is the upmost important factor. After a week of trying capsule wardrobe, you might find out more about what you actually need and improve to make the most out of wardrobe. Be it one week or a month of testing out your capsule wardrobe, you are still making the effort to living a more sustainable lifestyle.
