5 Steps To Find Your Personal Style

  • 3 minute read
Finding Your Personal Style
Images source Pinterest - edited by Melinda Mettai

By Mélinda Mettai & Rosa Rubin

We know that finding your personal style can be challenging sometimes, finding your own and nailing it, it can take years. This week we wanted to share with you our best advices on how to find your personal style and feel confident and empowered in your clothes.

1. Find your colour

Our first advice is to stick to a neutral colour palette, that way all your clothes work together.

Do you prefer hot or cool tones? Are you loud and vibrant or calm and subtle?

Identifying a colour palette will make your morning decision of what to wear a much less daunting task. The tone of your clothing  will reflect your personality or mood and by experimenting with different hues, you can enhance your daily look.

2. Choose your investment pieces carefully

Fashion is a cycle of change, every year High Fashion brands release up to 10 collections. We can all feel a little overwhelmed with all these trends… It’s important to take a step back and don’t rush at the first item you seem to like.

Find investment pieces that are timeless, so you can wear them again and again or even sell them later. Before buying an investment piece, always ask to yourself ‘Will I still want to wear it in six/twelve months?’ You will probably save some money, and waste for the planet.

3. Build a wardrobe of essentials

Another advice is to create a wardrobe with great and high quality basics.

What’s the item you wear the most? Whether it’s a tee or a pair of jean, choose quality and ethically made if possible (what we proved that it is). This way you can style them up with accessories to create your signature look.  You can find inspiration from sustainable brands on our weekly Style Edit here.  If you are on a budget, you can find a good list of sustainable brands with an accessible price tag here.

4. Finding inspiration

Another great tip is to follow different influencers and stylists that resonates with you, this way you can save their outfits on your IG saved photo section. When you are stuck finding ideas you can always refer to that. Pinterest is a great source of inspiration also. For example, you can make a Pinterest folder with styles and outfits that you love.

5. Collect unique pieces

Here’s a secret: your best finds will probably come from vintage shopping. It can be online or thrift stores, this option may take you a few hours, but you will probably discover those unique pieces that make you feel ‘you’.

First, focus on unique and timeless pieces like a leather jacket, a denim or even a pair of sunglasses. Once you have got the basics, you can start looking at cool and original items that make you feel empowered and happy.

If you are on a budget, you can mix your vintage finds with high quality accessories (jewelry, silk scarf, belt) to elevate your look. You can find more tips on vintage shopping and our favourite curators here.

In the end, the most important “rule” to have in mind when finding your personal style is to have fun and feel comfortable and confident in your clothes.
